After my first intensive research experience in summer 2022, I sought out many many many conferences to expand my mathematical knowledge. 17 in the first year. I have documented my adventures and reflections below both for myself and perhaps for the curious young mathematician wondering where to invest their time. I highly recommend building this practice of immersing oneself in professional mathematical community gatherings if you are considering committing yourself to pursuing a career as a research mathematician.
IMPRS Combo Cosmology and Quantum Information Theory Workshop - MPI MiS - Sept 30, Oct 1, 2, 2024
Can we write a code of ethics for the working mathematician? Matt Cordes' lecture series and guided discussions investigated challenges to accomplishing this task and motivations to pursue solutions. This felt like an incredibly valuable and often absent conversation in math research spaces. I really appreciated the opportunity to engage with this forum and thank the organizers for inviting Matt to speak.
Workshop on Geometric Infinite Surfaces - Max Planck Institute MiS - September 16, 2024
Totally jet-lagged and awake since 5am, I arrived the morning of September 16 at the MPI MiS to sign my year-long contract. Upon being shown to my office, I realized that just two steps outside my door, a conference was being set up for precisely the kind of math that excites me. I skimmed the abstracts, recognized the name of one of the organizers, walked upstairs to Sam Fairchild's office, pitched my talk to her, and asked if there might be 10 minutes of space in the schedule. One hour later, I was passing toy models around the room to prompt my colleagues to investigate one of my research questions in real time. I could not imagine a better first day of work. Except that in all the excitement I totally forgot it was my father's birthday -- sorry Papa.
Queer and Trans in Mathematical Analysis - Basque Center for Applied Math in Bilbao, Spain - June 12, 13, 14, 2024
Truly the most exciting and nourishing conference of my career thus far. An absolutely joyous space to have had the privilege to exist in. Every speaker was fantastic. I particularly adored the talks given by silviana amethyst, Tarik Aougab, and Katrin Wehrheim. The organizers accomplished a stunning feat in producing this event to nurture the global queer and trans math community. This was an incredibly meaningful moment in my life. It was an honor to be amongst so many people working to advance justice and solidarity in mathematics.
Mina Rees NY Women+ and Math Conference - CUNY Grad Center - March 2, 2024
This was a joyful reunion of many people I've come to know and love in the math world. I also met new people who I have since enjoyed crossing paths with, such as Johanna Franklin, who welcomed me at the NYC Discrete Math REU the following summer when I stopped by to visit friends who happened to be her students.
SUMR - SUNY New Paltz - Sept 30, 2023
Full circle! Back to my very first conference one year later. But this time it was my 17th conference! It was lovely to reconnect with the friends and faculty I met the previous year. There was also a nice chill socializing chunk of time where I got to teach lots of people how to play 7-dimensional EvenQuads which brought me great joy.
WIMIN - Smith College - Sept 23, 2023
Was very excited to support my friends in presenting at their first conference! This is a wonderfully welcoming environment and a great place for undergrads to find their footing in the conference world. Melody Chan's keynote talk was fantastic and I got to meet my advisor's former student who is now a professor at Amherst!
Spectra LGBTQ+ Math Conference - Princeton (online) - Sept 21, 22, 2023
I really appreciated this opportunity to be with community. The time spent in this space felt easy and joyful. And Kyne Santos' special appearance was particularly entertaining and inspiring :)
MoMath MOVES Recreational Math Conference - National Museum of Math in NYC - Aug 6, 7, 8, 2023
Totally fun time, so many creative ideas, engaging speakers, and enthusiasm from a wide range of ages. This is also where I met my MPI research advisor Érika Roldán!
Spectra Survey of Mathematics Conference - University of Kentucky - May 19, 20, 2023
I can't thank the organizers enough for this fantastic opportunity to be immersed in a community of queer mathematicians. I saw some amazing talks, and particularly adored Dr. Alexander Hoover's fluid dynamics of jellyfish propulsion.
MAA Annual Conference - Pace University - April 29, 2023
Seeing Talithia Williams give a keynote talk was such a treat! I had to go watch her documentary Zero to Infinity afterward. She and Eugenia Cheng are both so inspirational in their approach to communicating mathematics -- they are determined to share the joy and wonder innate in this great exploration.
Colorado Conference for Underrepresented Students in Mathematics - Colorado State University - April 14, 15, 16, 2023
So grateful for this opportunity! I saw some amazing talks, and seeing excellent mathematics presented by my peers was truly heartening. The organizers of this conference really went above and beyond in creating a space for us to thrive and be proud of the work we've done.
Computational Problems in Low-dimensional Topology Workshop - Rutgers University - April 8, 2023
Had some really valuable conversations, this was my first conference on a very specialized topic, and everyone was happy to elaborate on their research and provide broader context. One speaker had a particularly entertaining presentation style which I hope to see more of.
Initiative for the Theoretical Sciences Conference - CUNY Grad Center - February 17, 2023
Super wide range of topics and people, cool to see them all in one room. I particularly enjoyed Charles Brown's talk on ultracold atoms in optical lattices.
ENYGMMa: Empowering New York Gender Minority Mathematicians - CUNY Grad Center - February 10, 2023
Glad I attended this event! Made some great friends I'm still close with, and thoroughly enjoyed Moira Chas' keynote talk, she is a truly entertaining speaker and has created some absolutely wild models with hyperbolic crochet techniques.
Four Decades of Einstein Chair Seminar Conference - CUNY Grad Center - January 17, 18, 19, 2023
So much fun! Geometry, topology, dynamics -- topics I'm very excited about, community, familiar faces, learned about more seminars to attend Spring 2023. This conference was intimate and enjoyable, I estimate 60-80 people in the lecture room at any given time, no running around, exactly 12 hour-long talks scheduled, plus generous breaks, and big banquet, totalling to 22.5 hours of conferencing in 3 days!
Joint Mathematics Meetings - Boston - January 4, 5, 6, 7, 2023
Woah. Big. Lots of running around. Focused on attending pedagogical talks and learned a lot from those. About 30 people attended our research talk, fast-paced poster presentation was new and fun, made so many new connections! Meeting new people was the most valuable product of this endeavor.
Trans Math Day - Online - December 3, 2023
What a joy! Amazing talks, wonderful people. I dedicated all my free waking hours for a week straight on remaking and refining my presentation for this event, because the opportunity to speak at a conference designed to center my voice was so valuable and rare. Such a happy day.
OURFA2M2: Online Undergraduate Resource Fair for the Advancement and Alliance of Marginalized Mathematicians - Online - November 19, 20, 2023
Highly recommend to all undergrad math students. I learned about valuable programs I quickly pursued, I saw so many non-white-non-men mathematicians speak. I witnessed a great feat of collaborative effort of students serving their peers (this conference is entirely student organized).
AMS Fall Eastern Sectional Meetings - UMass Amherst - October 1, 2022
What fun!! My first non-undergrad math conference, and this immersion in such a volume and density of diverse mathematical thought was exhilarating. Spending three hours in a combinatorial algebraic geometry session, having absolutely no previous exposure to the content, and still enjoying every moment, solidified my confidence in throwing myself into unfamiliar mathematical opportunities with excitement.
WIMIN Women in Mathematics in New England - Smith College - September 17, 2022
This was a thoughtfully designed conference. I particularly enjoyed the keynote talk by Laura DeMarco on the Mandelbrot Set, which sparked in me a fascination with dynamical systems and prompted much googling and enthralling-fractal-image-collecting.
SUMR Symposium for Undergrad Math Research - SUNY New Paltz - September 10, 2022
Ah! My very first math conference, and I was essentially made a keynote speaker ( ⚆ _ ⚆ ) I gave the very last talk of the day to a room full of all the attendees of the conference! My parents, professor, and close friend all came to see me! This was a wonderful introduction to conferences, I was so full of happiness and excitement while speaking. I made three friends here who I still keep in contact with and see at conferences.
