My current outreach project, in collaboration with IMAGINARY, is developing an educational museum exhibition about quantum computing in the format of an arcade video game.
Below this short presentation about the project, you can find some resources that have informed my pedagogical philosophy.
I believe math can be a joyful and beautiful practice for every person.
However, an enormous amount of math trauma has been experienced by our global population.
I am pursuing the challenge of "re-humanizing mathematics" by creating opportunities for exploration, experiment, and play.
I am professionally committed to supporting and uplifting Black, Brown, trans, non-binary, women, and queer students and colleagues.
Math is a human practice, it is a language and art we have developed to help us describe the world around us and support our creative pursuits of designing and building innovative ideas and technologies.
Rochelle Gutiérrez is a scholar focused on changing the way mathematics is taught and analyzing the effects of race, class and language on teaching and learning. She coined the term "re-humanizing math" and prompts us to think about what parts of ourselves we are asked to leave behind when we enter the math classroom.
I encourage math educators to think about why we are teaching math and reflect on the reality that assessment of math capacity is used as a tool to maintain structural oppression and marginalization in our societies. I recommend reading this paper from the Just Mathematics Collective.
Axiom 1: Mathematical potential is equally present in different groups, irrespective of geographic, demographic, and economic boundaries.
Axiom 2: Everyone can have joyful, meaningful, and empowering mathematical experiences.
Axiom 3: Mathematics is a powerful, malleable tool that can be shaped and used differently by various communities to serve their needs.
Axiom 4: Every student deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.
My teaching experience is chronicled in the Credentials section of this website.
